PDF password

Lock a PDF. Or unlock one.

A payslip, a contract, a medical letter: put a password on it before you e-mail it. Or take the password off a PDF you have to open ten times a day. Typing your password into some random website would be a bit silly, so this all happens on your device.

How safe is it?

It uses AES-256, the strongest encryption the PDF format has, done by qpdf, a well-known open source PDF tool. Every PDF reader can open it: Adobe, Preview on a Mac, your browser, your phone. The encryption is only as strong as your password, so pick a long one (or let me suggest one).

Sending it to someone?

Don't put the password in the same e-mail as the file. Text it, say it on the phone, or send it through another app. Otherwise anyone who gets that one e-mail gets both.
